  1. Dear professor,

on the figure 1 timeline in Chapter One, the term “ca.” is used. Is this circa?
Also, I am completely unfamiliar with the term BCE (before current events, I have discovered) which seems to replace A.D. but I am not sure if this is used as an equivalent term. Does that still place current events as starting approximately 2,000 years ago?
Could you please shed some light on the subject?

    1. Hi Laurie,
Yes, “ca.” would be circa. BCE means “Before Common Era” (so BCE/CE). This is the equivalent of BC/AD and typically used more in secular academia (just a matter of semantics).

  2. CLASS PREREQUISITES: Completion of or concurrent enrollment in ENGL 1301

I have not completed nor I am concurrently enrolled in ENGL 1301. Does this mean I can’t take this course right now?

  3. I am unable to locate My Groups for posting the discussion. The directions say the menu on the left – but I don’t see anything like that. What am I missing?

  4. Prof,
For the discussions, are we not allowed to use outside sources? the one it is written on blackboard, makes appears as if it should ONLY be material from this class, like the textbook. I am trying to compare out of the 3, however, there isn’t too much in depth information, using the book alone.

    1. Hello,
For Discussion 1, you had all of the materials that you needed to complete it in Topic 1. For example, there was one lecture that had all of the material needed for the Southwest tribes if you chose them over the other ones. I am not completely opposed to outside materials, but the reasons that we have been stricter is that we had past students 1) using non-scholarly sources that had poor information and 2) committing rampant plagiarism.
      Professor Dellinger

    1. Hi Andrea,
If you want to take the test, you will just take it when you are ready (completing all Topic 1-3 material). If you want to do the project, you have to sign up for it through the Comprehensive Submission folder.

  5. Hi,
I just took the practice quizzes and was completely unable to fill in the blanks.
Do we need additional instructions in order to get Blackboard to allow us to fill in the information and submit it?
Also, once I took the quiz, I am unable to locate the quiz in order to take another practice quiz. Thanks, as a disclosure, I seem to be the oldest and least technical person in every class I take!

    1. Hi Laurie,
The most common issue for these questions is that some people try to type in the line after the text, but there is actually a textbox under the map for the response. If you did this, please try my recommendation. If not, please let me know and we’ll see if there is a larger issue.

Once you take the quiz, you should just be able to take it again as there are unlimited attempts. Simply click on the same link as you did the initial time.

No worries about the age and experience – we are here to help you out and I have had people of all ages coming through the RN-BSN program!
      Professor Dellinger

    2. Thank you for your response, I was not aware that it was posted twice : (. Sorry. I will try to locate the text box, I am sure it was my error, just another new experience : )
Thanks for the encouragement and support. Your videos and your responses make you very approachable and considerate!

  7. I, too, was unable to fill in the blanks. Am I missing something?
I plan to take the test. Will I be able to go back review my answers before I hit Submit? Please let me know. Thank you.

    1. Hello Juliet,
The most common issue for these questions is that some people try to type in the line after the text, but there is actually a textbox under the map for the response. If you did this, please try my recommendation. If not, please let me know and we’ll see if there is a larger issue.

For the test, do not take it until you are absolutely ready (i.e. completing all Topic 1-3 materials and practice quizzes). If you ever choose to do the project, make sure to sign up for the group in the Comprehensive Submission folder.

  8. Hi Professor Dellinger,
I made a mistake. I thought to get to the next topic I have to take the test. So, I did. Too late now. I have to be very careful. I’m still trying to familiarize myself with the blackboard and online study. Thank you for your response.

  9. Can someone pls tell me where to submit the journal? I have looked through the unit 1 folder, can not find it.
Also, the reflection due for unit 1 is due on the 29th. Is there any other reflection? I think I am missing some things. Please help, I don’t want to drop the class.

    Abi.

    1. Hi Abi,
All of the reflections take place in the topic reflection folders. For example, to complete the Topic 2 Reflection, go to Topic 2 and scroll down to find the folder. Each topic will have them. They use the Blackboard Journal tool for submission.
      Professor Dellinger

  10. Professor Dellinger,
I would like to clarify regarding the extra credit assignment. What are the 3 steps you are referring to? Can we choose one image for the project or do we have to 1.1 to 1.3.?
    Thank you for your response.

    1. Hi Juliet,
You need to do 1.1-1.3 to get all of the extra credit. 1.1 is by itself and 1.2-1.3 are combined into one post on Facebook. Just to clarify, none of them are related to the comprehensive submission project.
      Professor Dellinger

  11. HI,
I don’t see where to submit the project, if you chose that as apposed to the Exam. I have looked through all the tabs. Is this sent to you via email?

    1. Hello,
Given your email last night, I assume that you found the correct place? If not, you submit it in the Unit 1 Assessment group. Instructions are found in Unit 1 Assessment – Comprehensive Submission – Uploading/Commenting Guide.
      Professor Dellinger

    1. Hi Abi,
You can find them at the end of Topic 2 and 3 in the reflection folders (it looks like Topic 1 – I keep the format consistent). Just to remind you that you must have taken the Topic 1 checkpoint quiz to move on to other topics. These assignments were due last night, so they are no longer available and I hope that you were able to figure it out as you wrote this around the deadline. If not, they are not worth very much, so just move forward and complete the extra credit to help make up points.
      Professor Dellinger

  12. Good morning,
Needing clarification please. Our Reaction paper is due tomorrow however, it is “suggested” we not complete this assignment until we have reviewed the Reflection comments. Is this correct? Will the Reflection comments from Topics 2 and 3 be posted today sometime?
    Thank you,
    Jannette

    1. Hi Jannette,
Yes, I am almost done reading through them and will post my feedback. I pushed back the due date two days for those reflections from my summer class, so there is a bit tighter of a window. You should be able to write it either way, but it can only help.
      Professor Dellinger

  13. Professor,
I’m having a technical issue with blackboard and currently waiting for tech support to respond to a service ticket.
    Thank you,
    Susan

    1. Hi Susan,
Will you please forward the work ticket to your coach and me for documentation purposes? Thanks!
      Professor Dellinger

  14. Is it possible to obtain a textbook that is equivalent to the class material? I am having recurrent difficulties trying to use a PDF. I keep getting the message that “this PDF might not be displaying properly”. With six more weeks ahead of me, it may be worth the investment.
    Thanks,
    Laurie

    1. Hi Laurie,
There is a way to get a physical copy of this textbook through OpenStax/Amazon (https://openstaxcollege.org/textbooks/us-history/print) and you are also welcome to print the first half of the PDF at a place like FedEx. Have you tried using the Web View version yet? With regard to the PDF reader, are you on Mac Or PC? If PC, you can easily get Adobe Acrobat Reader, which has worked fine on my home and work computers (https://get.adobe.com/reader/).
      Professor Dellinger

  15. Hi Professor Dellinger,
doing better with the PDF since my husband got it into Adobe Reader for me. Reading is more consistent, now. Ha, just before I got your suggestion. Thanks, it is working much better and, although I could access the web, I feel that I understand the chronology better with the PDF.
By the way, he was so impressed with the course overview of English history! I couldn’t stop explaining all the events that led to the execution of King Charles. The lectures do a great job of supporting all the readings with broad perspective.
Thank you very much, you are always so prompt.
    Laurie

    1. Excellent news, Laurie. I am glad that it is working out for you.

I am also glad that you were able to share with your husband. I have had other students share feedback about discussing items with their families and that it helped their retention/processing. The English items are definitely interesting and a big part of the U.S.’s lineage. =)

  16. Hi Professor Dellinger,
Final post- Did not see any adjustments to the material between the 2 posts was your comment on my Discussion paper. I did post the adjustment. I thought I followed the instructions. Please advise.
Again, thank you for your response.
    Juliet

    1. Hi Juliet,
Two quick items: 1) Your coach grades the discussions (and reactions), so please follow up with him first regarding feedback; 2) keep in mind that this is an open website, so grading items like this are probably best served through email. You are welcome to use this website for questions, but I just want to make sure that you were aware.
      Professor Dellinger

  17. Hi Professor Delinger,
I’m sorry but I am worried. This is what I followed “Make any adjustments to your initial submission and resubmit as a reply to your initial post (do not start a new thread). I did post 6 days ago. What I think happened was I hit reply from the comment not from my initial post. Please let me know what to do. Thank you.
    Juliet

    1. Hi Juliet,
As I previously mentioned, please follow up with your coach first regarding this issue. If there are still questions afterward, I would be happy to discuss it with you both.
      Professor Dellinger

  18. Hi Professor,
after reviewing the Practice quiz for Topic 4, I am afraid I may be missing some study material. There are questions about Florida and Texas, for example, that I have not found information to in the lecture or reading material.
I am also finding all these wars and alliances quite confusing! Is there a timeline anywhere that you can suggest as a good resource?
    Thanks,
    Laurie

    1. Hi Laurie,
Quiz 4 was open on accident and is still using some older content. I have taken it down and will reopen it soon. Please see my recent email. Regarding the wars, there is no special resource that will have all of them. On a quick search, here is something that might work for your purposes: http://www.legendsofamerica.com/na-indianwartimeline.html I’ll dig around to see if I can find something else. You might also want to just create a quick grid and plug in columns with information such as “Name” “Dates” “Participants” “Outcome” to help you process it as you go through the text. We are less focused on the minutiae that larger themes, trends, and contexts, but it is important to understand how things progressed chronologically.
      Professor Dellinger

  19. I was wondering the same thing, I feel like I am totally missing something. I haven’t been able to pass quiz 4 yet.
    Kathi Jo

    1. Hi Kathi Jo,
Quiz 4 was open on accident and is still using some older content. I have taken it down and will reopen it soon. Please see my recent email.
      Professor Dellinger

  20. Dear Professor,
with a class full of nurses, you are sure to get an outpouring of sympathy : )
We hope your dog experiences expert care and a full recovery!
    Laurie

  21. Dear Professor,
    Hope your dog feel better.

Please when is the last day to drop this class without academy penalty?

    Thanks.

    Abiola.

    1. Hi Abi,
He does seem a little better today. Staying diligent with my care. Thanks for asking!

With regard to dropping, you would have it on your transcript if you left now (in these eight-week courses, it is pretty fast). The last day to drop is 9/21 if you feel that you need to do so.

Please let your coach or me know if you need any help with content. I would prefer to keep you if we can!

      Professor Dellinger

  22. I don’t know about everybody else in this class, but I am really confused about this class. I am spending hours and hours in front of the computer reading the material and trying to put everything in some order and assimilate the information. Everything is just a blur to me. Things don’t go in chronological order and the material is not very explicit. I have to use outside material just to understand what I am reading about in the material that is provided to us.
    Any suggestions? Pls help.

    1. Hi Stefana,
Regarding the layout of the course, I have had this conversation with a few students in the past who expressed the same concern. In short, we feel that it is unwise to look at history in straight chronological order. Utilizing that approach, you lose out on context and complex interactions that exist in larger frameworks. Many today feel that history should not be taught as a string of isolated events; rather, as part of larger trends, movements, etc. so you can get the bigger picture. That is why we use a thematic, topical approach that moves forward in a broader chronological manner (i.e. we start with pre-Columbian societies, move to early colonial periods, then late colonial periods, and then the early republic.)
About explicit material, this is a survey course that covers pre-Columbian and almost 400 years of colonial history in eight weeks. We try to give the best broad overview with specific targeted moments because we cannot cover everything. If you need further clarification or want further depth on specific material, please email your coach or me and we would be happy to help out.
      Professor Dellinger

    2. Hi Stefana, I am with you. I am struggling with this class and this is my first class ever that I am hoping for C. I can’t seem to understand the contents, very confusing. Also, the assignments are not very clear. As much as I spent hours on the materials like you, I don’t understand and right now, I am failing. I want you to know that you are not alone, my suggestion to you is to keep studying and do your best.

      Best of luck

      Abi

      1. Hi Abi,
As I have mentioned, please reach out to your coach or me with any specific questions that you have regarding both course content and assignments. We cannot help you if you don’t let us know what the issues are for you. The vast majority of the class is doing quite well, so I am sure that we just need to address the points of confusion for you to make sure that you can be successful.
        Professor Dellinger

    3. Stefana,

I too have had difficulties with this class so you are not alone! For me the structure has been very different from other online classes that I have taken, but I’m getting a handle on it finally! I would try and look ahead since these assignments can quickly sneak up on you without enough time to reach a coach. That was my initial problem. But if for any reason it’s late and you need help you can always email me and I will help if I can. I am up late, but work until 10pm some evenings so keep that in mind that you may not get a response until after that. I am trying the comprehensive assignment this time around versus the multiple choice test and thus far am going into it with more confidence than the test. I am much better at writing than test taking, but I wont know obviously until after I get a grade if I made the right choice. Stay positive, work hard, and you’ll do great! Good luck!

      Erika
      Erika.Burks@mavs.uta.edu

  23. We are told to use only the material that is provided to us, but when I am taking a test, there is no place where i could find the answers for certain questions.
    HELP !!! Pls

    1. Hi Stefana,
Please send me an email (jdelling@uta.edu) with some specific concerns that you might have with regard to test questions (do not post them here). What you wrote is a pretty vague, blanket statement that I cannot easily address without specifics. Additionally, we cannot stop you from looking at outside sources and there are plenty of good ones out there that can help support what you learn in this course. That being said, Dr. Breuer has a particular flow that she uses when she designs the course content, so outside materials may prove to be 1) not relevant/outside of scope, 2) excessive, and 3) factually incorrect (we do fact check what we use and cannot guarantee non-vetted sources). I look forward to your email to see if we can help get you on track.
      Professor Dellinger

  24. I came across some interesting information while going through the lectures and text, and for the life of me can’t remember where I saw it! It was talking about transporting large sums of single women from England to the colonies to match up with single men so as to populate the colonies. I don’t think it was a text but rather a video. I’d like to use this in parts of my writings this week but obviously need to know where I saw it to cite. Can anyone remember what video that was from? Thank you!

    1. Hi Erika,
This was King Louis and was in the French Empire in New France. You can find it in the lecture in Unit 1, Topic 3.
      Professor Dellinger

  25. Thank you Professor for pushing back the Unit Exam and Reaction 2 assignment to Sunday. It helps us a lot specially for people working Monday to Friday. I appreciate the feedback and wish to have an individual comment to our Reflections.

    1. Hi Juliet,
I do sometimes give individual feedback on these assignments if I notice people are significantly off, if they ask a question, or if they have something that resonates especially well with me, but given the informal, participatory nature of the assignments and the sheer quantity of them, giving written feedback to all is going to be very difficult. If you are not sure that you are processing things well in a particular topic, feel free to write a question and I will make sure to respond to it.
      Professor Dellinger

  26. Thank you for the push back on the due date!! Very much appreciated. I have been struggling just to get thru all the material in this unit – let alone start organizing a well supported thesis!

  27. Please clarify who to give credit for this propaganda about the Boston Massacre:

Paul Revere created “The bloody massacre perpetrated in King Street Boston on March 5th 1770 by a party of the 29th Regt.”
Notice the subtle details Revere uses to help convince the viewer of the civilians’ innocence and the soldiers’ cruelty (from US HISTORY STAX text “The Townshend Acts and Colonial Protest” )
    or
Radical leader Sam Adams skillfully propagandizes incident in the pamphlet, Innocent Blood Crying to God from the Streets of Boston (from lecture slides “Challenges to Imperial Rule” slide #47)

I understand that they may have worked together on this – just wasn’t sure who would be the correct answer to the question.

  28. Dear Professor,

Thanks for one extra day. I am grateful. I am so behind because my husband was involved in an accident on the 9th, so it has been rough. With 1 extra day, even if I do not complete it, at least I will do some. Thanks again.

Hope your dog is getting stronger.

    Abi.

  29. This class has been very difficult for me to follow. It is so much information in such a short period. Today is the last day to drop the class. I have never dropped a class before, and I have never failed a class before but I am barely hanging on at this point and I am afraid I will end up failing and this will kill my GPA. I have spent nearly 3 hours a night reading and studying and I feel I have not retained any of the information because it is just way to much. I understand this is an excelerated class, which I am familiar as I have taken excelerated classes before but with working 40+ hours a week it has been extremely difficult to keep up. Is anybody else struggling?

    1. Hi Carol,
I wrote back to you via email yesterday. Please let me and/or you coach know how we can continue to support you. Sometimes it is how you study that can make all of the difference. We would be happy to chat with you to help ensure your overall success.
      Professor Dellinger

    1. Hi Jannette,
Do you have a jpeg/png/gif saved on your computer? If so, you can click on the Word menu – Insert => Picture, and then select the file. You can move it wherever you need. Looking forward to seeing it!
      Professor Dellinger

  30. Question 16 on the Unit 3 Test: Could you please review the question and confirm that the choices for the answers are correct? I picked one, but couldn’t find the correct answer. Unless I’m just wrong. Thank you.

  31. Professor, can you please re-open the section for EC#4, I attempted to save it but click the submit and save button, I did not completed the assignment.
